Injuries caused by inappropriate neurosurgery

Our client was aged 29 at the time of injury. The claim for damages arose from injuries caused by inappropriate neurosurgery specifically for foramen magnum decompression surgery for Chiari malformation and inappropriate treatment with high dose steroids thereafter.

Our client also suffered avascular necrosis of both hips, caused by the treatment with steroids and this led to bilateral hip replacements at a relatively young age.

During our investigation it became apparent that the principal problem was the period following diagnosis of the Chiari malformation and then receiving steroids for longer than should have been, thereby causing vascular necrosis.

Causation was challenging however, once the timeline of diagnosis and treatment was established, an orthopaedic consultant commented and validated the causal link.

We were able to establish quantum, albeit a complex case due to the long-term impact of needing a hip replacement at such a young age. Our client felt that they were not able to return to their previous job role due to the psychological and physical strains it put on them. We ultimately secured a high value settlement for our client.
