On 01 February 2018 the Ministry of Justice launched a power of attorney refund scheme.

The refunds are being offered to those who may have been charged more than was necessary to apply to register lasting or enduring powers of attorney between 01 April 2013 and 31 March 2017.

The Ministry of Justice made the decision to make the refund because as more people applied to register a power of attorney the Office of the Public Guardian's operating process became more efficient, but their application fee charged was not reduced in line with this.

The donor that made the power of attorney or any of the appointed attorneys can make the claim for the donor to be repaid. Making a claim for a refund is a simple process and can be made by applying online or by telephoning the Office of the Public Guardian on 0300 456 0300. You must claim your refund by 31 January 2021.
