Data Protection Changes Proposed

Tougher data protection laws may be on the way if a group of MPs has its way.  Following a recent series of high-profile data fiascos, including the infamous loss of 25 million personal records by HM Revenue and Customs, it is expected that the changes will also receive widespread public support.  These changes may affect the responsibilities of company directors.

The proposals will call for a change in the law to make some directors personally responsible for the security and integrity of the customer data that their businesses hold.  While the new rules may be aimed at major businesses like banks and utility companies, they will also affect all businesses' public data records.

In anticipating these changes companies will need to have the correct employee policies and systems in place that prevent the knowing or reckless misuse of data that leads to potential prosecution.

If you are concerned about your data protection regime and how it affects your business and employees, please contact Alistair Latham or Mark Daubney.
